Improvements

I ran five miles today, and it wasn't hard. Eight hours later I'm not even sore. Three years ago I couldn't run a single mile without walking, and when I tried my muscles screamed in pain.

The secret to long runs is the same as the secret to rugged hikes. Take it slow. I'm no speed demon any time. At my quickest, I average a bit faster than 9 minutes per mile. Today, I averaged slower than 10 minutes per mile. So what? I'm not trying to beat any records, just to build my strength and my endurance.

I wonder if slowing down would help me accomplish more in other areas of my life as well.

Think of the story of the tortoise and the hare.
