Yummy in my tummy
"You know, that saying 'Too many chefs spoil the broth' is not entirely accurate," Ben said tonight, after Dan, Lindsey and Michael joined us for an evening of communal measuring, chopping, simmering and eating. The five of us worked together to make chanterelle vegetarian messy rice, and it was incredible. For some reason they say that SNDC - which stands for Sunday Night Dinner Club - is not a dinner club. Whatever it is, I like it.

Actually, SNDC really does stand for "SNDC is Not a Dinner Club". It's meant to be funny, but it's a "ha ha only serious" joke. I've never actually written down an explanation for this, so let me give it a shot.
The name is meant to acknowledge the fact that the spirit of the group can remain the same, even if the day or the meal changes. SNDC hasn't always been on Sunday night (it was on Wednesdays for a little while and then Thursdays for a time), and it hasn't always been dinner (it was lunch for a while). But it's always been SNDC, even if we didn't realize it at the time. It's also an acknowledgement of our mission of inclusivity -- a "club" can be exclusive, but SNDC is not -- and of the fact that the dinner itself is second in importance to spending time with one another and getting to know one another better. And, of course, SNDC's name is a geeky nod to the name of the GNU Project, where GNU stands for "GNU's Not Unix".
In any case, I'm really glad that you and Ben are coming now. The group had been languishing since Roy, Electra, and Sarina all moved to Japan, and it hit a low point a couple of months ago. Now it seems to have been revitalized. I'm so happy about that!

Wow, that's really funny and cool. Thanks for the explanation. Ben and I have really enjoyed joining the not-club, too.
