Social life

I owe a thousand people phone calls right now, but my excuse for not dialing is that it's 11 p.m. on the west coast, 2 a.m. for most of my friends out east. Also, I've been faking having a social life.

Early on today I volunteered at a regional science bowl, where I was on the "celebrity panel," a bunch of adult journalists willing to humiliate ourselves by competing against the most scientifically brilliant high school kids in Oregon and Washington. They wiped the floor with us.

Then Ben and I ventured back to our old neighborhood for a Portland tradition, breakfast in the afternoon. We went to the Cricket, which was Ben's old haunt for years. Long before he knew me, he and Jason used to eat there and goof off together. Ben pointed out that we've been going there together for 5 years now. We started dating in January 2002. Pretty amazing.

In the evening, I hung out with Michael and a bunch of Daily Newsers in downtown Vancouver. Beer, barbecue and poker* were the featured entertainment of the evening. Michael is a Grinnellian and former Daily Newser, just like me, and he even works at my current paper. Which is kind of spooky.

* (Originally I wrote "beer, barbecue and power," but that was a typo. Though "power" would have been an interesting alternative to "poker.")
