I'm having a hard time coping with the magnitude of the flooding and devastation along the Gulf of Mexico. One of the country's major cities may be uninhabitable for months. This could be the end of New Orleans. The poor, the frail and the old are suffering the most.
None of us is safe from the awesome power of nature.

Susan's here. Rawk!
Also, I have new glasses, so my web site icon is no longer accurate. Oh well, I'm not changing anything. Rawk!

In "Henderson the Rain King," the main character is plagued my an aching inner voice: "I want, I want, I want."
Henderson is wealthy, his desires have nothing to do with physical longing or temporal aquisition. It's a spiritual cry.
Lately, I have felt a similar want. Maybe I've always felt it. Like Henderson, I don't know exactly what it is I desire or how I'll find it.

Name that bird!
Yesterday, I came across a very peculiar bird. I wanted to approach it, but it was being chased by two geese and a swan, and I'm kind of scared of geese.
Then a man came at the bird. The geese and swan backed up, and the strange, multi-colored fowl stepped forward and started eating out of his hand.
The man told me he thought the bird was a duck, that he lived near the lake, and that he stopped by to feed it almost every day.
I googled around, and I have to say I could find no ducks that resembled this animal. By throwing in the name of the lake where I took my stroll, however, I did come across a couple of pictures of the bird.
Can you tell what it is from its head shot or full body profile? Its feathers are much more colorful than the pictures reveal.
Ben and I were both kind of thinking it looks like a turkey, but I don't think that's what it is. The person who photographed it called it a "territorial goose," but on his web site he also admitted that he's not sure it's a goose. It's feet are webbed and it fraternizes with water fowl, so I suspect it goes in the lake sometimes, too.

Life in Woodland
I've been having some technical troubles with this site for the past little while, but Morgan seems to have fixed them. So now I'm back.
Big things are in the works at work, but I don't know all the details yet. Whatever the outcome, I think I'll be better off. I'm in an admirable position, as I am pretty happy with my job right now.
Today, Ben and I are hoping to venture back to the Ape Caves. First we have to track down that other headlamp, though.

I can drive a stick shift! Ben taught me! I got into first gear without jerking too much, and second gear without jerking at all. And then, when I had that down pretty well, I drove all the way home from the middle school parking lot, getting all the way up to fourth gear along the way, then back to third, then up to fourth, then down to first when we pulled into the parking lot. It was incredible.
