cheesy? yes, but I like cheese.
Okay, maybe I should think about some of the things I am thankful for. It only happens once a year, after all.I'm thankful for Ben in more ways than I can say; the cats; Rian for being smart, funny, fun and here; my family for refusing to accept just about any of society's norms, except the "love your family" one; Ben's family for embracing me and feeding me. I am thankful that I have so many friends across the country, and for the fact that they stay my friends even when I never call or e-mail them. I am thankful for the internet, I hope I never go back to life without it. I'm thankful for good food, butter, whole milk creamy yoghurt, Pizzicato pizzas, Gardenburgers, toast, whole wheat bread, squash, and whatever I may eat tonight. I am thankful for Law and Order, Buffy reruns, good independent movies, creative music, NPR and OBP and PRI.I am thankful for the state of the world we life in. It's easy to look at how much is wrong, how much seeems to be getting worse or has gotten worse in recent years. But so incredibly much is right, too. When my grandparents were born, only white men could vote in most of the country. When my parents were born, American employers could legally hire, fire and set salaries based on age, race, gender; in Virginia, interracial marriage was illegal. Today there is more democracy, more religious freedom, and more opportunity than there has ever been in history. Even though there continue to be disease, poverty, discrimination, oppression, pollution, war and needless death through bad bureaucracy and ill-directed diplomacy, I believe that the world is getting better. I am thankful for it.I am thankful that I am on the right path in life, even though I've got a long way to go before I reach my destination; that I get to write for a living; that I'm really starting to have a "document state of mind" and that I'm doing my best to improve every day. I am thankful for the freedom of the press.I am thankful for my health. I am thankful that I live in a nice apartment with nice things, and that though it is very messy, I don't have to do all the cleaning by myself. I am thankful for all of the incredible opportunities that I've had in my life to get me where I am today. I am thankful for Portland, Oregon, and for Laura Nawojchik, who bravely came to this unknown city with me two-and-a-half years ago. I am thankful for my mental stability.I am not, however, thankful that I don't know how to cook. Especially since I promised to make squash risotto for dinner today. I think I inherited my cooking skills from my dad's mother. I also think I would much rather sit here and type for hours than go downstairs and figure out how I'm going to go about this. Too bad. Time to go.
