avocado's number

There's something about avocados that seems like they should be so good. They are fleshy, nutritious, and a soothing green color. With avocado industry billboards scattered around the city and seven vegetarian cookbooks checked out from the library it's little wonder they've been on my mind. So last night I decided to embark on an avocado adventure, with cheddar and mozarella cheeses, tortillas, and other yummy things mixed in. It ended badly when I bit into my freshly grilled California-style quesadilla and remembered that I can't stand the taste of avocados. They're squishy and icky and gross. They're on the list of "things every vegetarian should like but I just can't enjoy," along side mushrooms and eggplant. So I tossed the quesadilla and had cooked carrots, butternut squash and vanilla yogurt for dinner instead. Then off into the night. Listening to live jazz with Ben, sipping a coke, I looked out at the slick Portland streets, the flashing lights of an ambluance against the wet black pavement, and the tragic beauty of the world was all around.
