having surfed the blogs of the world
okay, I nearly made an attempt at humor, but aborted it at the last minute. It was going to be some sort
of satirical web log, based on my perusals of a bunch of blogs of late. Overstating that I've been on the
internet for years, far longer than most of the losers out there. c. 1992. Listing my own domain,
preferably with the nu suffix. Refering to a picture on a skanky looks-based ratings page. Telling people
not to update their blogs on the Day Without Weblogs. Referring to a smattering of articles from national
and international media. Posting a blogger icon on my site. Oh yeah. By doing these simple things, I too
could be part of the club.
But here's something I've been pondering. It's about blogger. Admitedly I haven't used it, so maybe I'm
missing something. It seems like a great tool, allowing users to easily archive online journal entries and
have permalinks to specific thought sequences, even when the URL for those thoughts changes. But these are
all things that would be relatively easy to implement for the web-saavy -- things that I intend to
implement myself soon. So I don't understand why so many folks who claim to be web folk & computer geeks &
so forth use the durned thing. Or is having the blogger icon on your page somehow akin to wearing Converse
All Stars in 4th grade, or No Fear clothes in high school, carrying a doubly-G Gucci purse? Is it more a
status thing? Alternately, maybe I'm easily fooled, and a lot of these apparent web geeks are really just
faking it. But regardless, I'm confused. Oh well.
